In their student handbooks, colleges often dedicate pages to detailing codes of conduct and behavioral expectations. Since the 1980s, Whitworth has kept it simple. Students living on campus know that they are to abide by the “Big 3” rules: no drug or alcohol use; no cohabitation; and no violence against persons or property. Additional rules in most residence halls are decided upon by the residents themselves at the beginning of the school year. Student-life staff members foster a campus in which the emphasis is placed on developing the whole student, one who is responsible for his or her own decisions within the context of the “Big 3.”
