Whitworth students who grapple with the comforting insulation of a college campus often seek ways to reach out. In 1990, students Chris Koch and Chris Murphy, both ’94, felt convicted to live out their faith beyond the borders of campus. Koch came up with the idea to make sandwiches for residents of low-income housing in Spokane; he collaborated with Murphy to launch En Christo, a student-led outreach program that continues to operate nearly 25 years later. Students packaged and deliver the meals on Saturday evenings to provide food for Sunday, when many soup kitchens are closed. Students serve as many as 375 lunches each week, giving them ample opportunities to connect with and minister to their Spokane neighbors.
