Though hundreds of freshmen come to Whitworth with different educational and career goals in mind, they join together shortly after arriving on campus to display their choreography and lip-sync skills at Mock Rock.
Since the fall of 1989, as part of Orientation Weekend, freshmen have performed elaborate productions of song medleys, with selections ranging from musicals, like Grease, to Disney tunes, to boy-band arrangements, to the popular songs being played in high rotation that year. Each dorm enjoys its moment in the spotlight, and each performance is judged by a panel of students and staff, which selects the top “Mock-Rocking” dorm.
Students have a short amount of time to polish their routines, which are always boisterous, often clever, sometimes tenderhearted, and occasionally controversial. Along with Yell-Off, the cheering competition, Mock Rock is one of the final activities of Orientation Weekend; in addition to being hilarious, it allows students to form important bonds with their hallmates that often last well beyond their freshman year.
