The Virgin Pine Cone

Posted by - - Revelers

Though it’s hard to pinpoint the year in which the campus community agreed that one wasn’t fully a Whitworthian worthy of a diploma until he or she had caught a pine cone as it descended to the ground, the tradition of catching a “virgin pine cone” has kept students looking up on campus for at least thirty years. Students have come to recognize the distinctive rustle of this prickly prize as it falls; especially on windy days, students position themselves under pine trees throughout The Loop, limber-limbed and at the ready to catch their cones. Many alumni have kept their pine cones, packing them up with each move, some even bronzing them as prized trophies to display.
