In 2002, Kevin Wang, ’04, made waves when he captured Whitworth’s first NCAA Division III swimming national championship by winning the 400-yard individual medley and setting a national record. That year he also posted top performances throughout the swim season and made the All-America team.

Wang would go on to become an 11-time All-American, a two-time NCAA champion, and a national runner-up, all while serving as swim-team captain. After graduating, he worked at Whitworth as an assistant swim coach for nearly five years, developing and managing the distance team’s season plan, which incorporated nutrition, weightlifting, and academic commitment. Wang coached Whitworth swimmers to conference championships and NCAA finals each year. He became head coach of the Spokane Waves Aquatic Team, which grew in size and accomplishments during his tenure, before moving to Boise to work as head age-group coach at the YMCA.
