In the early 1960s, Clyde, ’50, and Annie, ’57, Matters moved to Nigeria, where Clyde served as program officer for the Ford Foundation. The Matterses traveled extensively along Africa’s coastal regions, including Nigeria, the Congo and Ghana. Along the way, Annie gathered this collection of African artifacts, including masks, sculptures, fabrics, ceramics, musical instruments, and unusual items such as a handmade gun and a Muslim prayer board.
