Place of service: Bolsa Chica Wetlands

Why I Serve

I serve because it is a wonderful way to give back to the community while enriching relationships with and appreciation for the people and world around us.

I drive past the Bolsa Chica Wetlands at least once a week, and often enjoy the beauty of the wildlife and walking paths. The flora and fauna surrounding the wetlands always seemed to be a bit protected from the pollution that plagues nearby beaches. When looking for a place to volunteer, I learned that the Bolsa Chica Conservancy works constantly with volunteers to clean the area and ensure the safety of the wildlife, both plants and animals that call the wetlands home. It seemed like the perfect way to have an impact in my own community, and it was a bit of a bonus that it’s just a few minutes from home.

How I Serve

Along with a group of Whitworth alumni and friends, I worked to remove problematic plants and pollution from the wetlands. Since the organization brings in many large groups, it was easy to clear large areas quickly, but also evident that without people serving consistently, the area would not be as healthy and beautiful.
